2020 marks 25 years since the ECtHR judgment in McCann. The qualified protection of the Right to Life under Article 2 of the ECHR and the use of lethal force continue to present the ECHR as ‘a living instrument’ expressing ‘Convention’ values – democracy and the Rule of Law. This is particularly so regarding the procedural limb of Article 2. But the development of and reaction to the jurisprudence of Article 2 also raises profound questions about democracy.

This event will be an opportunity to reflect and review 25 years after McCann.
