Call for Nominations
The Annual General Meeting of the Human Rights Lawyers Association, which will include the election of a new Executive Committee and new Young Lawyers’ Committee, will be held on Tuesday 29th January 2019 at Hogan Lovells, Atlantic House, Holborn Viaduct, London EC1A 2FG.
The AGM is a great opportunity to catch up with other members, gain insight into the HRLA’s work over the past year and take part in the shaping of the work ahead. So even if you don’t intend to stand for election, please do come along and join in the evening.
Nomination for the Executive Committee
Members of the Association who would like to serve on the Executive Committee should consider standing for election. The committee consists of the officers (president, chair, vice-chair, treasurer, bursary officer and secretary), and twelve further elected members. Up to five co-opted members (excluding two co-opted members from the Young Lawyers’ Committee) will also serve as part of the Executive Committee.
Committee meetings take place on the second Wednesday of each month at 6pm. If you are unable to make this monthly commitment to the HRLA, please do not stand for election. Furthermore, committee membership requires a commitment to the HRLA to plan and arrange events, as well as co-ordinate and implement all aspects of the HRLA’s work. If committee members miss three consecutive meetings without a good reason, it will be considered that the member has resigned.
Any member who would like to stand for election to the Executive Committee must be nominated by two other members of the Association, with written notice to be emailed to the HRLA Administrator by Monday 14th January 2019. Alternatively, a member may be nominated for election by the current Executive Committee: any candidate who is unable to get the written endorsement of two other members can contact the Executive Committee (via the HRLA Administrator) with her/his details, requesting that the committee put them forward for nomination.
All of the elected Officer posts – including the Chair – are open for nominations.

Nominations for the Young Lawyers’ Committee (YLC)
In addition to the Executive Committee there is the Young Lawyers’ Committee (YLC), which consists of up to eight elected members of the Association who are students of law or human rights, trainee solicitors, pupil barristers and paralegals. Two members of the Young Lawyers’ Committee will be co-opted onto the Executive Committee and as full members, may vote at Executive Committee meeting
If any student members (including trainee solicitors, paralegals and pupil barristers) wish to stand for election onto the Young Lawyers’ Committee, they should inform the HRLA Administrator by email of their details, by Monday 21st January 2019. Nominees for the YLC should also include a brief pitch for an event they would like to run (300 words maximum), setting out a discussion topic, ideal speakers, venue and so forth, which will then be circulated amongst the Association ahead of elections.
In addition, any two members of the Association may put forward a resolution for consideration at the AGM: should you wish to do so, please send written signed notice of the resolution to the HRLA Administrator by Monday 14th January 2019.
The AGM agenda, including the names of the candidates for election to the Executive and Young Lawyers’ Committees and ballot sheet will be circulated on Wednesday 23rd January 2019. To ensure that all of our members have the opportunity to take part in the election process, we will also be opening up for electronic ‘postal’ votes. For this, the ballot will need to be completed and email returned to firstname.lastname@example.org. The deadline for electronic votes will be Sunday 27th January 2019 by 10pm.
