Events

These are free or subsidised for HRLA members. Events may be part of a themed series of seminars or one-off sessions on particular issues. HRLA events provide an opportunity to explore topical developments that affect the development of human rights law in the UK. This may be a judgment of the House of Lords or the European Court of Human Rights or developing Government policy. All HRLA events provide a forum for constructive discussion and debate. Interaction is encouraged. Where appropriate, we also promote human rights events of other organisations

“It was fantastic yesterday to join friends and human rights luminaries to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 70 years since the European Convention on Human Rights came into force, 25 years of the UK Human Rights Act, and the 20th birthday of the Human Rights Lawyers Association. The collection of contributions in the HRLA’s commemorative booklet provides still further food for thought, causes for concern, and reasons for hope..” Adam Smith-Anthony

Lord Carnwath was a justice of the Supreme Court from 2012 to 2020 and a pioneering environmental law barrister before his time on the bench. He is now, amongst other roles, a Visiting Professor in Practice at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment.

Jessica Simor KC is one of the leading barristers at the human rights and public law bar, with a particular expertise in environmental law. She was lead counsel before the ECtHR in the landmark KlimaSeniorinnen case, where an international court ruled for the first time that state inaction on climate change breached the applicants’ human rights.

Please note:

The event will be held in person only and under the Chatham House Rule.

Attendees' names will be shared with Hogan Lovells International LLP for the purposes of admission to the event.

The HRLA may be taking photographs of this event for use on our website, social media accounts, and/or promotional materials. If you have any objection to being photographed please let us know before the event begins.

We are very grateful to Hogan Lovells for hosting this event and we hope you can join us.
