Details
The HRLA June Event, Britain’s New Commission for Equality and Human Rights: Challenges and Opportunities, on Friday 15 June 2007 will consider the role and impact of human rights and equality commissions in promoting and protecting human rights standards and in contributing to the development of a human rights culture.

The new Commission for Equality and Human Rights (CEHR) will formally open for business in October 2007. Trevor Phillips was announced as Chair of the new Commission in September 2006. Trevor will discuss the establishment of Britain’s Commission for Equality and Human Rights and explore the challenges and opportunities which he foresees the Commission will face in its formative years.

The Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (NIHRC) was established in March 1999 following a commitment by the UK Government in the Belfast Agreement of 1998. In the early years of its existence, the NIHRC was forced to go to the House of Lords to challenge limitations imposed on its powers. The Irish Human Rights Commission (IHRC) was established in 2000 and has wide powers to promote and protect human rights as defined both in the Irish Constitution and in international human rights instruments to which Ireland is a party. In September 2006, the IHRC was elected to chair the European Co-ordinating Committee of National Human Rights Institutions. Prof. Monica McWilliams, Chief Commissioner of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission and Dr Maurice Manning, Chief Commissioner of the Irish Human Rights Commission will add comparative perspectives and speak of their pioneering experiences of leading Human Rights Commissions across the island of Ireland.
